Barcelona, GSMA Mobile World Congress 2009 - At MWC 2009 UbiEst, global developer of location-based mobile services, has announced a partnership with Aepona, the leading supplier of telecom service layer products and solutions to Telcos globally, to bring to market a compelling family application, based on NAVTEQ® maps showing the benefits for Telco’s to embrace the “Network-as-a-Service” (NaaS) business model.

Ubiest and Aepona have signed a partner agreement under which UbiEst will provide its leading suite of location-based applications for Aepona to integrate with its award-winning Universal Service Platform and take to its mobile operator customers. UbiEst’s location-based services form a significant part of Aepona’s Family Bundle service offering, which will be launched at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, February 2009.

“We are very pleased to have UbiEst as a partner for location based applications”, said Al Snyder, CEO of Aepona. “They have proven sector knowledge and the ambition to support Aepona in our mission to help telecom operators be more competitive in the new Web 2.0/Telco 2.0 market. With this combined application and platform solution, Aepona is providing a clear route to market for an application provider, as well as helping to jump-start the commercialisation of a NaaS business model for our operator customers.”

UbiEst has developed a suite of Mobile Location Based Services for fleet and workforce management, personal security, off board navigation and social networking. UbiEst also provides MapBroker Infomobility Platform, an application framework of functional components, modular services and ready-to-use applications enabling an integrated approach to the development, implementation and delivery of Location-Based Information across a wide range of mobility services. UbiEst’s strategic alliance with NAVTEQ ensures their products have the best cartographic support worldwide.

UbiSafe, the location based mobile service developed by UbiEst for family peace of mind, allows users to precisely locate families carrying a GPS-equipped smartphone or a small portable GPS tracker, called UbiSafe box, and track their movements from an Internet connection or a mobile phone. The GPS device is a small locator weighing 70 grams, responding to locations requests with the exact GPS position and the speed of the person carrying it, as well as triggering SMS alarms in case of leaving “safe zones”, exceeding a stated speed limit or sudden braking. UbiSafe was the Grand Prize Winner at EMEA NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge®.2008.

“The UbiSafe application won a NAVTEQ LBS Challenge 2008 award, supported by Nokia and Blackberry for best consumer application. By using the Aepona Telecom Web Services APIs we could very quickly improve and add new features into our application. Things like network based location, call control and audio call have really improved the application for the end-user. We also are pleased that Aepona selected us for their Family Bundle solution and the tools and support they provided have been excellent for us. We think that that this service demonstrates how all parties in the value chain can gain, from the end-user to the Telco.” said Nicola De Mattia, CEO of UbiEst.

Aepona’s Universal Service Platform is a carrier-grade software solution that allows operators to open up their networks to third party application developers, web-based service providers and Enterprises, in a controlled, standards-based and billable manner. The platform has been chosen by Tier 1 operators such as Sprint, TELUS and Bell Canada to enable them to drive service innovation through collaboration with partners, enable faster time to market for new services, and to dramatically reduce the cost of onboarding third party application developers and service providers.

Eurotech DuraMAR 2150 Mobile Access RouterNew compact, high-performance rugged mobile access router designed for secure communications, seamless mobility, and interoperability for defense, public safety and commercial transportation networks

Eurotech announces the new DuraMAR® 2150 series Mobile Access Router, an integrated rugged Mobile IP router designed for net-centric operation in vehicles installations such as on trains, buses and metros. Leveraging Cisco Systems’ industry standard IOS® software and 3200 series mobile access routing (MAR) technology and Eurotech embedded Linux wireless communication controller, the DuraMAR router enables prime contractors and systems integrators to achieve mobile communications-on-the-move (COTM) and a wide range of new in-vehicle networking applications, from wireless Internet access to Voice over IP (VoIP), passenger WiFi services to streaming video surveillance and smart vehicle diagnostic/maintenance.

The DuraMAR 2150 model is particularly well suited for demanding train-borne applications where system operational reliability and integrated structure are required as this rugged router is designed to meet shock, vibration, humidity, safety and protection standards of IP65, EN50155, EN61373, as well as radiated and conducted EMI/EMC levels and immunity of EN50121. One 10/100Mbit Ethernet port is brought out through a sealed locking automotive grade connector. The Wireless terminals such as GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA, IEEE 802.11 a/b/g and/or CDMA2000 EV-DO Rev.A may be integrated inside the DuraMAR 2150 router.

An internal 3-band GPRS/GSM modem allows remote access to the DuraMAR 2150 for diagnostics, status monitoring, configuration, as well as alarms using SNMP protocol. This independent wireless interface enables remote access to HW modules of the system such as the embedded PC, router wireless interfaces as well as the CISCO router. SNMP protocol can be used over GPRS TCP/IP data to query the DuraMAR 2150 independently of the wireless interfaces used for primary router communication.

Being a Mobile Access Router ideally suited for integration in vehicles, it offers secure data, voice and video communications, seamless mobility and interoperability across multiple wireless networks. Applications can be made in the transportation, defense, public safety and homeland security markets.

The social problem of “architectural barriers”

According to many people, being able to easily move about the city is just a common and normal ability, because very often they forget that for those with mobility impairments the built environment presents challenges daily. Free movement in pubic spaces is assumed by most people to be a right even if terms such as “architectural barriers” and “disability” have been already defined becoming one of the most important topic of our modern society. Even if the movement along streets and through buildings seems to be easy and normal for the great part of people, for some, however, these basic conditions are not adequately met. What we usualy define “disability”, in fact, is a condition that limits mobility,or otherwise inhibits a person’s ability to manipulate the environment with a “normal” degree of effort. For this reason, all the obstacles that lessen a disabled person’s access in many places are called “barriers”. They may be, for example, represented by parts of buildings just like narrow doorways and heavy doors that require excessive force to open. In order to make public and private built environments “user-friendly” it is possible now to use the so-called Ergon system: double-swing ERGON doors are, in fact, the ideal solution for disabled people. The longitudinal arch movement of the leaf and the double-swing system allow disabled people to enter or exit the same room simply by pushing the leaf and so the door is no longer an architectural barrier for handicapped people because, thanks to this special system, accessibility is improved and the disabled can move around much more easily. Let’s hope that these new solution will be applied in all public and private buildings as soon as possible.

The fundamental role of overcentre valves in hydraulic systems

Posted By veronique

The purpose of overcentre valves is to maintain a set pressure opposite a load, keeping it from free-falling. Now, thanks to the new advancements in overcenter valve technology, controlling a load smoothly has become much more easier especially when pumps and actuators become more advanced and, at the same time, directional control valves become more complicated.
In selecting this kind of elements one fundamental parameter to take into consideration is the release characteristic that is based on the direct coherence between the pressure and the flow via the valve. Often unwanted oscillations in applications like crane booms or lifting platforms are caused by over dimensioned flow cross sections or insufficient dampening of these valve types and consequentially all the latest developments in this peculiar domain aim at creating a valve that can unify both sufficient dampening and good responsiveness. This special technical discovery could represent a real help for the needs of customers manufacturing mobile machines. So now many suppliers of valves are trying to do their best to create special products for hydraulic systems in the mobile and fixed sectors: all this items have been projected in order to meet the specific requirements of every type of customer.
