Every August 5th millions of people admire the play of light and white artificial snow-flakes fall from the Borghesiana Chapel of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the Snow which recalls the miracle that took place on the Esquiline Hill in a hot summer night of the year 352. According to tradition, in fact, the night of 4 and 5 August in the year 352, the Virgin appeared in a dream to Pope Liberius and to a Roman pair of lovers who can’t have children that would have offered all their possessions to build a church in the name of the Virgin Mary. The Lady in that dream, told their the future location of the church: the famous Santa Maria Maggiore Square on the Esquiline Hill. Therefore, Pope Liberius and the two lovers immediately went to the Esquiline Hill and right at that place admired the miracle of the immense expanse of snow in that sultry summer night. The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is also known as Santa Maria della Neve, or Liberian Basilica, in the name of its founder Pope Liberius and the miracle of that night.
